Packaging

Queen Victoria Market is committed to contributing towards a new era that inspires consumers to think more about stewardship, frugality and responsible choices. Our Night Market food traders are using BioPak plant based packaging. BioPak products are made from annually renewable resources and certified carbon neutral, making them a great sustainable alterative to conventional fossil fuel based packaging.

Solar Panels

1,328 solar panels, cover one third of the market roof. The system can generate 252,000 kilowatts of electricity enough to power your home plus 45 of your friends houses for a whole year. The solar panels have decreased the Market's energy use by 2.6% with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 146 tonnes.

Water Harvesting

Water Harvesting has reduced water use by 18% which equates to a saving of 1 1/2 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Water is captured from the roof of the Market, treated and recycled to provide an alternative water source for flushing the Queen Street public toilets.

Plastic Bag Amnesty

Queen Victoria Market won the ‘Award for Excellence in Green Purchasing – People’ at the recent ECO-Buy Awards. The Market has influenced millions of shoppers to adopt sustainable purchasing behaviours by reducing their use of plastic bags. To date the Bag the Bag program has diverted 1.4 million plastic bags from landfill.

Energy Efficient Lighting

Energy efficient lighting in the Market sheds has halved our power consumption and ensures a better spread of light for all our Night Market shoppers.

Waste Management

Queen Victoria Market has achieved the Waste Wise Silver Certification for the Metropolitan Waste Management Group’s Waste Wise Program for our action plan to minimise waste water and maximise efficient use of resources.
