Coffea Coffee Celebrates 15 years at Queen Victoria Market

Lisa and Fabio at Coffea Coffee are the sort of people we’ve all got in our lives.  They are the ones who you speak with first of a morning when you order your coffee. You begin by talking about current affairs, the weather, and the latest leadership topple and over time you end up being a regular dinner guest, you pick up each other’s kids from school and might even go on holidays together.  At least that’s how things tend to go at their much loved café at Queen Vic Market.

Coffea, now in its 15th year at Queen Victoria Market came into existence one afternoon when Lisa was meeting a friend and doing her usual market grocery shop.  Noticing the heritage listed Elizabeth Street shop was vacant, she told Fab she’d found the perfect place to start their own business.  Fabio, had 10 years under his belt at this point as master roaster for Grinders, and was looking for the right spot to put his skills to work and build a family business. Over time the business became a popular and much loved part of the market and a need to expand into the neighbouring shop became apparent.

Today Coffea proudly continues to serve specialty coffee alongside an exciting Italian inspired menu.  Toni Davidson, their much loved Head Chef gathers all her produce at the market each morning and cooks her seasonal lunch dishes according to what inspires her in the marketplace.  The dishes don’t appear on a menu as such, rather every day you’ll find a list of lovingly created specials to choose from, bursting with freshness and flavour.

Whilst the lunch menu might never be the same two days in a row, there is one item that never changes. Coffea’s signature cake, “Castagnaccio”, is made with chestnut flour, pine nuts and rosemary, and it’s so popular it has been baked every day now for 13 years. Needless to say, it tastes great with coffee and is just perfect served with a chat about the weather or whilst planning your next holiday with your dear friends.
