Melbourne Fashion > 2013 Spring Trends by Emily Collie | Editor melbournegirl.com.au

I don’t know about you, but I am sooooo happy that spring has sprung! Farewell cold, grey, miserable and wet Melbourne. Bring on sunshine, warmer weather, longer days and many more fabulous social functions.

New clothes, accessories and shoes are definitely on the agenda and it’s time to start chatting about spring trends. Some are back with a vengeance from last year, and others are emerging with a ‘bang’.

The good news is there are styles to suit every shape and size. Styles that suit every bank balance too! From high-end splurges, affordable wardrobe staples and most importantly, bargain finds!

Five styles that we can expect to see in Melbourne for spring this year:

1. Floral Headbands

Spring Racing is on the cards for most Melbournians. If your thinking about heading to the track this season, THINK FLORAL! You can make your own floral halo using fake flowers; they are practical, affordable and can be worn over and over. They are also a perfect addition to you festival fashion outfit.

If you want to do something extra special, head into Qn Flowers (located in String Bean Alley) and chat to Quynh about having a custom designed fresh flower headpiece made. Book yourself into your trusty hair stylist (who doesn’t love a pampering on raceday), to ensure the headpiece is attached securely and I guarantee you’ll look even more gorgeous than Jen Hawkins in the Birdcage!

2. Monochrome

Got to love good old black and white (and every shade of grey in between). This trend is perfect for taking your fashion from work-wear to after dark party-ready. Think tailored man style pants, teamed with a shirt for day and your fave rock star tee for after work drinks.

Gorgeous mono evening blazers with a metallic sheen and luxurious sportswear pieces in the crispest of whites! Nothing says sophistication like a head-to-toe white ensemble.

If you are game (or unlike myself, have a toned tummy), crop tops are in! Keep an eye out for all white or all black designs. They will compliment your staple wardrobe items, like denim shorts and leather skirts as summer approaches.

Footwear also slots in nicely to the mono trend. Black ankle strap pumps are huge and will no doubt be around all next year too. Get a pair with a metallic heel or ankle strap to get the glam look.

3. Get Printed

Embrace print-on-print. Intriguing geometric panels and a mix of colour blocking can help you highlight your assets! Two words to add to your fashion vocabulary are ‘perspective’ and ‘kaleidoscope’. Both refer to the reflective look, a balance of shapes and patterns that repeat on the fabric and look amazing! Dresses of this style are going to be huge for spring racing and the start of wedding season.

To tone down the look, team a statement geometric print top with a simple skirt or tailored shorts or visa-versa. A pair of loud, printed pants will look spectacular with a plain peplem top or cute solid colour tee.

A statement, geometric scarf is the perfect ‘low-cost’ statement accessory to add to your look to achieve the trend.

4. 1920’s Inspired

Melbourne will have Gatsby fever this Spring!

After the popularity of Baz Luhrmann’s latest hit film, the roaring twenties has shifted it’s way back into the trend charts. If you haven’t already watched The Great Gatsby then you are missing a truly visual spectacle of glamour, opulence, drama, excess, and of course, fashion!

Look out for dresses featuring embellishments, sequins and beading. Team your looks with pearls, diamonds, feather headbands and other bling accessories that shout ‘glam’. Think glamorous and boho with a touch of statement sparkle – silver, bronze and golds with shimmer, shine and glitz!

For gents, it’s all about beautifully tailored three-piece suits, collegiate blazers, preppy ties and boat hats; these combinations create an elegant look that is sure to impress. For those gentlemen who are confident enough to wear a statement piece, go for linen trousers, bow-ties and wingtip shoes. Check out Iakov Menswear for a great range of formal menswear.

5. Denim

Two words peeps… INJECT DENIM!

I’ve just started buying some fresh new denim jeans and shorts in anticipation for the ‘flesh exposed’ months. You can also invest in denim shorts, overalls and lightweight shirts if you want to achieve the denim x denim look.

Dark denim, light denim, coloured denim, black denim, acid wash denim, printed denim, floral denim. When it comes to the shades of denim this year, there really are no right or wrongs. They all work, so there is sure to be a style for you.
