‘Twas the week after Christmas, when all through the home.
All the creatures were stuffed and not moving a bone.
The prawns had been cooked and eaten with care.
And the Boxing Day sales had been tackled with flair.
The weather was sunny causing kids outside to leap.
While parents were exhausted wanting nothing more than sleep.
‘But wait’ one exclaimed as the festive season tried to leave,
‘We may have just forgotten about New Year’s Eve!’
Christmas has been and gone but the festive season isn’t over yet!
This Thursday we celebrate as one year comes to a close and another one starts off. And in true Australian spirit, it is time to take a picnic to the parks around Melbourne and herald in the New Year with some fireworks.
We have been scouring the Market for a whole range of delicious and delectable treats to form the centrepiece of any picnic. Seafood, cherries, chocolate . . . Here are our suggestions to make your celebration the envy of the park!
Prawns are quickly becoming the new Christmas feature on tables around Australia, but that doesn’t mean you need to stop eating them on December 25th. They make the perfect accompaniment to a New Year’s barbeque down by the Yarra or served alongside some Mt. Martha oysters on a cold seafood platter. Visit Yianni at the Seafood and Oyster Spot to pick up some of these renowned oysters and Australian banana and tiger prawns.
When it comes to fruit, there is nothing better than taking advantage of the best seasonal produce. Nectarines, blueberries and watermelons are all hitting the shelves as the weather gets warmer but this year is also a bumper season for cherries and now is the best time to take advantage of them. Get down to Garden Organics and start that healthy organic eating before 2015 with some beautiful cherries.
Drinking alcohol by itself is so 2014. Get ahead of the trend with these decadent guilty treats from Koko Black. Among their huge range of alcohol infused (and non-alcoholic) offerings are a Baileys Chocolate, Orange & Cointreau Truffle and an Aurelia Champagne Truffle. These signature chocolates are perfect to take you into the New Year, but don’t forget they also do gift boxes if there is anyone you need to thank for a very nice Christmas present!
Food isn’t the only concern at any New Year’s Eve celebration. To secure that New Year’s kiss you also need to be looking your best. Drop by Parlour to pick up some gorgeous hand and body crèmes or eau de toilette to help ensure your beauty regime is under control for the big night.
Keep an eye out for their Cleopatra range. She was regarded as the most beautiful woman of the ancient world so those crèmes must be pretty good!
Make sure to drop by Queen Victoria Market this week to pick up everything you need for New Year’s Eve during our extended trading hours. In addition to our normal trading, the Deli Hall, Meat & Fish Hall and Fruit and Vegetable traders will be open on Wednesday 31st December from 6am-2pm.
