Frequent Queen Victoria Market shoppers Tegan and Matt are the inspiring duo behind ‘Green Warriors’. Their aim is to educate and motivate as many people as possible to eat clean and live a healthier lifestyle.
When it comes to shopping for fruits and vegetables, there is nothing that compares with market shopping for variety, taste, and freshness. We always try and buy organic when possible, and the Queen Vic Market has an incredible organic section, which is very well priced, and has a wide variety.
We love shopping at the Queen Vic Market because we know we are supporting our local farmers, and also supporting the growth of the organic food industry, which is expanding at a rapid pace. This growth will allow organic food to become more and more affordable, which will lead to more and more consumers.
Unfortunately for a long time now it has been cheaper to buy an entire meal at a fast food restaurant, than it is to buy half a kilogram of tomatoes. In our minds this does not promote healthy eating, and anyone on a budget and who isn’t very educated on nutrition, is always going to choose the cheaper option.
We are excited that this is turning around, and we know that as the organic industry grows, becomes more affordable, and people become more educated, then it will have a major positive impact on the health of our communities. This growth is dependent on us supporting places like the Queen Vic Market, which is supplying us with the finest organic produce available.
We load up on our organic fruits and vegetables at the Queen Vic Market at least twice a week, and we would like to share with you some of our favourite recipes.
One of our favourites is the ‘Green Smoothie’.
A green smoothie is an amazing way to start your day! It is extremely nutrient dense and as a result it will nourish you on a cellular level. It contains easily digestible carbohydrates to keep your blood sugar levels balance, which will alleviate cravings and keep you energised all day. It is very high in fibre, which is crucial for maintaining a clean and high efficient digestive system; dates for example contain a special fibre known as beta-d-glucan, which slows the absorption of cholesterol and sugars through the intestinal wall and into the blood stream. A green smoothie is extremely high in antioxidants to fight free radical damage, and also contains highly alkalising minerals to help your body remain in an alkaline balance.
It is also a great meal to have after a workout, as the nutrients and carbohydrates can be absorbed straight into the muscles, replenishing muscle glycogen stores, and providing amino acids for recovery.
Here is our favourite Green Smoothie Recipe:
Green Smoothie Recipe
-2 medjool dates pitted
-2 bananas fresh or frozen
– 2 sticks of celery
-1 big handful of spinach leaves
-2 tablespoons chia seeds
-3 tablespoons goji berries
-1 Teaspoon Maca powder
-1 to 1.5 litres of chilled water and ice cubes
or 100% coconut water
-Add any other fruit of your liking. I enjoy adding frozen mango cheeks, papaya and pineapple for a tropical taste.
1. Wash and chop up all the ingredients into chunks removing any skin from oranges.
2. Place all the ingredients into a blender. Put the juiciest fruit at the bottom and the more delicate (spinach) close to the top.
3. Blend and serve
We recommend putting in superfoods to add even more nutrient dense ingredients to give your body the best possible start to the day! We have had clients lose lots of weight just by adding a green smoothie into their daily routine. A high-speed blender (Vita-mix) is preferable when making this smoothie however a regular blender will do the job.
We are big on juicing and juice fasting! Often we go to Queen Vic Market and stock up for a week of juicing, which requires 1-2 20kg bags of Carrots, 8-10 bags of green apples, red apples and golden apples, a box of lemons and a box of beetroot, all organic of course! Don Tolman’s juice recipe CABALA juice is designed to cleanse your body inside out. It is a balanced recipe created to keep you satisfied yet clean out all areas of your body riding you of disease and health problems.
Makes 2 Litres of juice
-2.5 Kilograms of Carrots
-2 red Apples
-1 small Beetroot
– 2 Green Apples
– 1 Lemon (rind and all)
– 2 Golden Apples
1. Wash the fruit and vegetables thoroughly
2. Chop the tops of the carrots, beetroot and the core out of the apples
3. Using a juicer juice the fruit and vegetables into two even glass bottles.
4. Cabala juice tastes best chilled in the fridge before consuming.
The final recipe that we will share is our healthy lettuce wraps. Basically they are just like any normal wrap however we are replacing bread with lettuce. Bread is extremely hard to digest, is highly acidic, contains very little vitamins and minerals, and also many breads contain gluten which a lot of people are intolerant to. Lettuce is a great replacement for bread as it is very easy to digest and is also very low in calories so you don’t have to worry about portion control. We often eat up to 5 or more lettuce wraps and don’t feel one bit sluggish or bloated afterwards. Our lettuce wraps are full of highly nutritious vegetables and healthy fats.
– Romaine or iceberg lettuce
– Basil or dill
– Spring onion
– Home made beetroot or hummus dip (optional)
1. Break of a few leaves from the head of lettuce.
2. Chop up the vegetable
3. Place the vegetables inside the lettuce cup
4. Squeeze the lemon over the top, and add the beetroot or hummus dip as an additive if you like.
5. Close the lettuce cup and tie it off with a spring onion stalk.
Video demonstrations on how to make all of the recipes we have provided here can be found on our blog http://greenwarriors11.wordpress.com.
We hope you enjoy!
